Harrison Leaves-Hale is a boy from England. He moved to Spain1 with his parents two years ago to look for a better life.

They live in Costa Blanca. Every year the town has a 10-day carnival2. During this year’s carnival, the six-year-old boy beat hundreds of Spanish children to become king of the town. He is the first English boy to become a Spanish King.

The carnival is very important to the town and people take it very seriously. They always follow their traditional steps to find a king, so it’s a great honor3 to be king. Harrison has been on local television here and has been giving many radio and magazine interviews.

Mrs. Leaves-Hale said, "At first, I was not sure if we would be accepted as I don’t speak a word of Spanish, but I think it helped that Harrison could speak the local language."

Mr. Hale is a tiler4. He was very excited, "Where else could I have gone from being a tiler to the father of a king!"

The town people also found Harrison a queen. The queen is a Spanish girl named Sara.

After the exciting carnival, Harrison had a good rest, but then he will have lots of duties to do over the year.

You know the feeling. We’ve all asked our-selves that unhappy question, "Where on earth2 did I leave my keys?"

Now a team of Japanese scientists say that they have come up with the answer. They have invented a new kind of glasses named Smart Goggles. Thanks to3 a special camera and a computer, these glasses can "remember" things you have seen.

If you walks around the house, telling the Smart Goggles the name of everything, they will remember. So you just need to tell the glasses what you are looking for and they will play into your eyes a video of the things you saw in the last few seconds.

The scientists believe that if people put information into Smart Goggles from the Inter-net, with that information, the glasses might actually know much more about what the wearer is seeing than the wearer himself, such as what an animal is and even who a person is.

The glasses are still too big for everyday use. However, the scientists are sure that they can soon make them smaller. They could even be small enough to look very similar to a normal pair of glasses.

Of course, there is one mad question they would not be able to answer, "Now where did I put my glasses?"

Everywhere there are mother and daughter relationships that are similar1 to the one in the film.

Adele is tired of life in the small town of Bay City. She decides to leave her husband and move to the big city Beverly Hills. Although Anne does not want to leave her cousin, father and friends, she has to go because of Adele’s dream —to make Anne a child star. Anne doesn’t want to act, but in Adele’s mind this means nothing.

Adele and Anne meet many difficulties and have some success along the way; they have trouble paying the bills and getting along with the rich and famous people they live among. About 60% of U.S. families have at least one dog, cat, bird or other pet. Many have more than one. Pets are not only people’s friends, but also can bring improvement in the health of older people. Tracy Wight is a doctor and she reports that pets help her older patients feel happier. They tell her the pet is just like their friend. Wight’s grandmother had a special relationship with a cat named Pele. She said the cat never hid1 from her and seemed to like her attention and care.

Other reports say that having a pet reduces2 the need for people to see a doctor. A 1999 study shows that older people who have pets are healthier than those who don’t. This is because they are more active and have better health.
How does pet ownership keep the owner healthy? First, pets need walking, feeding, care, and they need to be played with. All of these activities ask their owners to do something. Even just letting a dog out a few times a day can be very good to the owner. Often doing these kinds of exercise can keep pet owners able to do other activities during their daily lives. Pets also give old people love and happiness.

Dear Mr. Smith,

I have a problem. I came to England as an exchange student, but I often feel lonely and scared. I have no friends and I don’t know how to get along well with other people. I’ve tried my best, but I never really succeeded. What should I do? Can you give me some advice? I hope to receive your letter soon.

Best wishes.

Yours,

Li Wei

Thanks for your last letter. / I’m very glad to receive your letter.

来信一开始就点出了自己的困惑have a problem;接着说出了自己困惑的原因:have no friends;I don’t know how to get along well with them,很明显,解惑是我们回信的重点;最后李伟说明自己虽已尽力,但仍然失败了,所以回信的末尾应该写一些鼓励的话语,如:Although you failed, be confident. I think you will succeed because you have done your best.2. 我们应该根据"how to get along well with them"确定要写的重点,如:be friendly to them; give them a smile every day; try to help them等等,并且围绕着要点做适当的发挥;在要点最后,可以用一些总结性的话语,如:In a word, be kind to others等。3. 写作时可能用到的短语和句型:thanks ... for ...; make friends; look forward to; get ready to; worry about ...

Dear Li Wei,

Thanks for your letter. I’d like to tell you how you can deal with your problem. When I first went abroad, I was also in the same trouble. I think you can do the following. 1. Don’t worry. Whenever you come across something difficult, look around and I’m sure you’ll find lots of people who are ready to help you.2. Smile to others every day. No one is richer than a person who often smiles at others. When you smile, although you might not say anything, but others will still understand you.

Best wishes.

Yours,

Mr. Smith

如:although you might not say anything, but others will understand you。

Dear Li Wei,

I’m very glad to receive your letter. When I first went abroad, I was also in the same trouble. Here is some advice to help you:1. Be friendly to others. When you see someone in trouble, get ready to help them and maybe, at the same time, they might be able to help you, too.2. Give others a smile every day. No one is richer than a person who often smiles at others. 3. Don’t lose heart. Although you failed, be confident. I’m sure you will succeed because you have done your best.

In short, be kind to others and, in time, they will treat you in the same way. Best wishes.

Yours,

Mr. Smith

Powerful sentences:

1. I have no friends and I don’t know how to get along well with others. get along / on ... with表示"与…… How is he getting along with his studies?

2. I’m very glad to meet you here and to have the opportunity to introduce myself.

3. They have given me what I need but not what I want.

4. Day by day, I became closer to everyone in my class. day by day 表示"一天天地;日益"。例如:He grew older day by day.

Dear editor, Now I’m in trouble. My friend Wang Hui often copies my homework. I am very angry with him. Yesterday while we were having a test, he wanted to copy my answers, but I didn’t agree. He said, "Friends should help each other. We are not friends from now on."

He left and didn’t talk with me. I’m very confused and I don’t know what a true friend is. What should I do?

I hope to hear from you soon.

Best wishes!

Yours,

Lin Tao

Dear Lin Tao,

I’m glad to hear from you. Thank you for your trust. Let me give you some advice.

I think friends should help each other, but when one friend does something wrong, it’s our duty to help him or her. You said that your friend Wang Hui often copies your homework, but it’s not good for him to do that. That’s very bad for his studies. Last time you didn’t give him the answer. I think you did the right thing. Good friends should notice each others’ mistakes and help each other to correct the mistakes. You should have a talk with Wang Hui. I think he will understand you. Then you can become true friends.

Good luck.

Yours,

Mary

The Donkey and the Little Dog

—By Mary

A man had a little dog and he was very fond of it. He would pat its head, and put it on his knee, and talk to it. Then he would give it little bits of food from his own plate.

A donkey looked in through the window and saw the man and the dog. "Why does he not make a pet of me?" said the donkey. "It’s not fair. I work hard, and the dog only wags1 its tail, and barks, and jumps on its master’s knee. It’s not fair." Then the donkey said to himself, "If I do what the dog does, maybe he will make a pet of me."

So the donkey ran into the room. It brayed2 as loudly as it could. It wagged its tail so hard. Then it tried to jump on to its master’s knee.

The master thought the donkey was mad and shouted, "Help! Help!" People came in with sticks, and they beat the donkey till it ran out of the house, and they drove it back onto the field.

"I only did what the dog does," said the donkey, "and yet they make a pet of the dog, and they beat me with sticks. It’s not fair."

Jenny’s Little Sister
—By Mary

It was hard to be the younger of two sisters. I got all the hand-me-downs1. I never got to do anything first and my teachers always said, "Oh, you’re Jenny’s little sister." "No, I am Lauren!" I never liked being the youngest.

Jenny and I got along with a few fights here and there.

A few years ago Jenny and I were in a very bad car accident. She was okay, but I had a broken arm and a large scar2 was left on my face. I even didn’t want to see myself in the mirror. Jenny told me that I looked great and I shouldn’t worry about the scar.

One day I was riding home from school on the bus. A guy named Jordan made fun of me about my scar. When we got off the bus, I didn’t say anything to Jenny about what he had done. Almost every day he would make fun of me, and I would get off the bus crying. Finally I broke down and told Jenny. She was angry.

The day after I told her what had been happening, when Jordan made fun of me the next time, Jenny stood up, walked to where he was sitting and said something into his ear. I don’t know exactly what she said, but he never said a single word to me again.

So, even though getting all of the hand-me-downs may not be the best, I am very happy to have a big sister like Jenny looking after me.

Ever since that day, when anyone asks, I will tell them, "Yep, I’m 'Jenny’s little sister’. "I am proud of it.

[size=+2]You Have Green Hair

—By Sunbird
Hurt feelings between people can be very upsetting. How should you respond when someone comes to you complaining about being "put down" by someone else?1
Psychologist Jack Canfield has a good suggestion. Tell them, "Suppose I were to say, 'Joe, you have green hair. ’Would that make you feel bad?"
He’ll probably answer, "No." Ask, "Why not?"
His likely answer will be, "Because I know I don’t have green hair."
You say, "So what I say to you needn’t affect how you feel. It’s what you believe about yourself that is more important."
"What if I say, 'Joe, you are mean and selfish.’? That can only hurt you if you have doubts about whether you really are mean and selfish. If you clearly understand that you are a warm and generous person, then you won’t be hurt because you know what I said isn’t true.
"Anytime you feel upset about what someone says about you, or something you do, it’s because at some level you doubt yourself in that area.2"
Suggestion: when people feel hurt, tell them this story and ask if they have green hair.
Notes:
respond v.
affect v.影响
mean adj.小气的
selfish adj.自私的
doubt n.
generous adj.

As the days grow slowly shorter
And summer fades away1
I look forward to autumn2
Its cool and happy days

Pumpkins in the field
Waiting to be cut
Yes, it’s turned to autumn
It has a cooler touch

The chillin the nighttime
Is drying all the leaves
As they fall in the wind
From off the maple trees

It smells so sweet and earthy
So fresh and oh so clean
We bundle up in daytime
For it’s cold while we dream

And the colors of fall flowers
Just seem to blend right in
With the orange of autumn
A lovely refreshing spin3

A very special season
Is just starting to begin
For summer is now over
And it’s autumn once again!
Notes:
chill n.寒意
the maple tree 枫树
earthy adj.
1. fade away
3. blend in with表示"与……

—By Kasey Chambers
Every time my tears
Have ever fallen
I keep’em1 in my pocket
For a rainy day
So when it’s pouring
I take them outside
I let the rain start washing
My tears away

But on a bad day
When hearts are breaking
There’s not enough rain to carry
All the tears away

Every time I’m blue
2I take my feeling
I hold it tighter3
And I don’t let go
And when the sky gets whiter
And the air is colder
I throw my feelings
To the falling snow

But on a bad day
When hearts are breaking
There’s not enough snow to carry
All the blues away

Every time my heart
My heart starts breaking
I take this pain
And I hold it down
And I wait for the wailing4
When the wind is coming
And my pain is blowing5
Through another town

But on a bad day
When hearts are breaking
There’s not enough wind to carry
All the pain away
Every time my tears Have ever fallen
I keep’em in my pocket
For a rainy day

Notes:
1. keep’em= keep them
2. I’m blue
3. tight adv.
4. wail v.号啕
5. blow v.

—By Robert Louis Stevenson
I saw you throw the kites on high
And blow the birds about the sky;
And all around I heard you pass,
Like ladies’ skirts across the grass
—Oh, wind, a-blowing all day long,
Oh, wind, that sings so loud a song!
I saw the different things you did,
But always you yourself you hid.
I felt you push, I heard you call,
I could not see yourself at all
—Oh, wind, a-blowing all day long,
Oh, wind, that sings so loud a song!
Oh, you are so strong and cold,
Oh, blower, are you young or old?
Are you a beast of field and tree,
Or just a stronger child than me?
Oh, wind, a-blowing all day long,
Oh, wind, that sings so loud a song!
Notes:
blow v.
hide v.
beast n.

又把那鸟儿刮进苍穹;

In Tarifa, many people enjoy surfboarding1, especially in autumn and spring. Your surfboard should be about one foot longer than your height. That will allow you to catch the waves and be so stable that you won’t easily fall off your surf-board.

Before you begin to surf you should be able to swim at least 100 meters without stopping. Once you have learnt to catch and ride small waves, then make sure you can swim 500 meters without stopping. If you want to ride two-meter waves and bigger, then be sure you can swim at least 1,000 meters without stopping, and be able to swim at least 25 meters under-water.

Swimming keeps you healthy. It also makes you feel good in the water.

It’s better to surf with a friend. Some people think that it is best to surf with another learner. Some think it is better to surf with a more experienced surfer, so that you can learn from him or her. In either case you will learn from the other surfer and increase the chances that there will be someone there who can help you. The other reason for surfing with someone else is that you cut the chances of yourself being bitten2 by a shark!

In Ethiopia, a very poor country in East Africa, girls as young as 12 often have to drop out of school and marry. Their families need money, so their parents sell them to their future husbands. Instead of being in school, these young women spend their days cooking, cleaning and caring for children.

One way for these girls to avoid this kind of life is to be on a running team. Girls who run can stay in school longer and if they train hard enough, they might make a good living one day as a professional athlete.

Even if this doesn’t happen, the training and additional schooling these girls receive make them stronger and help them to feel better about themselves.

In 2005, Chevy Ortman had an idea after reading an article in The Washington Post about girl runners in Ethiopia. She started an organization called Girls Gotta Run. It is a group that gives these runners the new shoes and clothes they need for training.

One of the main ways that Girls Gotta Run raises money is through art shows. Many artists donate money to them. These artists give half or more of the money that they make at art shows to Ortman’s group.

The team that Ortman’s group helps is called Tesfa. Girls on Tesfa have to be hardworking. They run twice each day and must stay in school to remain on the team.

In Japan, there is a network of basket-ball clubs for elementary students called "Mini Basket". Usually the teams practice in elementary school gyms. Sometimes a team is based1 at a public sports center. The court is smaller and the baskets are lowered. The teams are open to anyone, not just students at that school.

The language for coaching and practice is Japanese, but some English-speaking parents come sometimes. There are 3 practices a week. Both boys and girls are included, and their ages are from 6 to about 12.

Each practice also has a parent assigned2 to it for duty. That parent must come a few minutes early, let the children into the gym, turn on lights, lower the baskets, open the windows and so on. And the kids help them too.

Practices start with warm-ups. Then there is about an hour of working on skills. Finally, the coach assigns teams, and a few games are played.

In the end, the kids help close up the gym. Finally, when everything is done, there is a "thank you / goodbye"bow3 to the gym, the coaches and the parents.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a student from China. I am interested in Korean holidays and festivals. In China, we have an autumn festival. Since it occurs in middle of autumn, it is called "Mid-Autumn Festival". On that day, families get together and celebrate the harvest. Do you have a festival like this in your country? How do you celebrate it? Please write to me about it!

Yours,

Zhang Hong

Dear Zhang Hong,

I am happy that you want to learn about our country. Yes, we do have a festival in autumn. It is called "the Harvest Moon Festival".

This festival on the 15th day of the 8th month, just like your Mid-Autumn Festival, and it is similar1 to the American Thanksgiving Day. The days before and after it —the 14th and the 16th of the 8th lunar month —are also holidays. The three-day holiday gives people the time to visit their hometowns.

It is the most important of all the Korean holidays. During this time, many people crowd the highways with their cars to visit their hometowns and family members. Similar to our lunar New Year holidays, family members visit their living relatives and the graves of their ancestors2. Family members exchange gifts and play special games.

Every country has its own ways of eating. Now I’ll tell you some table manners in our country.

Maybe you will eat with older people, such as your friend’s parents. If you go to a restaurant for a formal1 dinner, the seat farthest away from the door is the best one, so reserve it for the older people. Wait for the elders to pick up their spoons2 first. Sit straight in your seat.

When you begin to eat, try the soup or juice first, and then start on the rice or other dishes. Use the spoon for the rice and liquid3 foods, such as soups, and use the chopsticks4 for other foods. Do not make any noises with your spoon or chopsticks by hitting the rice bowl or any other food containers. Do not hold the rice bowl or soup bowl in your hand during the meal.

During the meal, quietly put the inedible parts, such as bones onto a piece of paper so that others won’t be able to see them. Do not put them on the table or the floor. Don’t eat too quickly or too slowly: try to keep pace with others. Wait for the elders to put their spoons and chopsticks down onto the table first, even if you have already finished eating.

Three people from different countries went to live in America. Here, they are talking about the differences in eating habits and shopping for food between here and their native countries.

Different people who live in different countries have different eating habits. In our country, people usually go shopping for food in the supermarket and they like to eat in restaurants on holidays or weekends. People like to drink Chinese tea after eating food that has fat, because Chinese tea has the benefit of stopping the fat from hurting the stomach. —Jason

However, the quantity1 of goods2 that you can buy at the supermarket here is almost the same as in Hong Kong. In Chinatown3 in San Francisco, we can even find the same kind of Chinese traditional food. —Charles

In my native country, the biggest difference is how people shop for food. People shop for food in a place that we call a "market"! It’s not the same as the supermarket here: the vegetables are fresh, the fish are alive and so are the chickens! But of course, there are no cows, only beef. The price is not fixed. May Day (May 1st) is celebrated in many places around the world. The traditions and stories about May Day are different from place to place. However, there is one thing that is the same in most celebrations: the use of flowers!

One of the most popular May Day traditions is to hang a basket full of spring flowers or other small gifts on a neighbor’s doorknob1.

A popular activity on May Day is to decorate a pole2 with colored ribbons3. Some people also add flowers and balloons. The pole is usually carried in a parade4 and then placed in the ground at a certain place. People then dance around this "May pole", holding the ends of the ribbons in their hands.

In London, May Day is celebrated by children going from house to house. They bring flowers and get a little money in return. The money has a special use. Kids then throw it into a wishing well.

In France, cows play an important role on May Day. The cows are led in parades, with many flowers tied to their tails. The people watching the parade try to touch the cows; this is believed to bring good luck.

On May 1st, people in Hawaii celebrate their own kind of May Day. They call it "Lei Day". People give Hawaiian flowers to each other. They put them around each other’s neck and sometimes give a traditional kiss.

My name is Wang Lin. I am a school-boy from China. I am Wang Lin, a student in Number One Middle School. There is a river in our town, which supplies water to us all. We must do something, because the river is now polluted by all the garbage in it. As a volunteer, I will try my best to protect our river. I’m looking forward to hearing from you. I hope to get your response / answer soon.

Dear John,

I’m Wang Lin, a middle school student from China. I want to be a volunteer. I want to do something for the river in our town. I think I can make the river clean. The river is very important to us, you know.

Do you think I could be a volunteer?

Yours,

Wang Lin

Dear John,

I’m Wang Lin, a boy from China. I have just come here with my parents. I’m writing to tell you that I’d like to be a volunteer.

We have a river in our town, which supplies water to us all. However, there is too much garbage in the river, and it has polluted the water. So it is time for us to do something to protect the river right now. If I can be a volunteer, I will try my best to stop people from putting any more garbage into it. Then I will do something to recycle the garbage with you. I really hope that I can be a member of you and together with you make the river clean and our life better. I am looking forward to getting your response.

Yours,Wang

Lin

Powerful sentences:

1. We have a river in the city that is very important to all of the residents.

2. Protecting our river is the same as protecting ourselves.

3. On both sides of the river, many factories have been pouring dirty water into it, polluting the water badly.

1. 重点说明自己想成为志愿者的愿望及成为志愿者后要做的事情;

I would like to be a volunteer, because I find that in the town, many people use plastic bags and plastic lunch boxes. What is worse, they just throw them away, everywhere. As a result, this has caused "white pollution". Of course, this is bad for the town, making it look dirty. If I can be a volunteer, I will try my best to stop them from doing this with you, so that we can have a more beautiful town. I’m looking forward to your reply.

Insects Use Plants as Telephones

"Hello? Yes, this is my plant. Thanks. Bye-bye." This is a talk between insects on a plant. Scientists have discovered that the insects below and above ground can use a plant as a chemical1 telephone.

A team of researchers are now studying this. However, they are still not sure whether it is popular for insects to talk on plants.

The talk is a friendly one: if the plants are not occupied2 by root-eaters, leaf-eating insects above ground love them more.

When an underground insect chooses a plant, it will eat the plant’s roots3. In order to tell leaf-eating insects that it owns the plant now, the underground insect sends a special message through the plant leaves. Then the leaf-eaters can know that the plant is occupied.

The study shows that the insects above ground are becoming more and more clever. They can learn whether the plant is occupied by their underground friends. The green phone lines keep insects from competing for the same plant by mistake.

On the other hand, the underground insects can also communicate with a third "person" through the green phone.

For example, when an insect finds that its plant is occupied by another one, it can send a message through the plant leaves to the other insect’s enemies4. This may be a good way to scare away that insect!

—By Chris Laddish

There’s a small cross by the side of the Highway 128, near the town of Boonville. If this cross could talk, it would tell you this sad story:

Seven years ago, my brother, Michael, was on a friend’s farm. They decided to go out for dinner. Joe arrived and volunteered to drive —after just one drink.

The four friends drove happily along the winding road. They didn’t know where it would end —nobody did. Suddenly, they drove onto the other side of the road and hit a car that was traveling in the opposite direction.

That night, we watched TV in front of the warm fire and then went to bed at about 9:00 o’clock.

At 2:00 am, a police officer woke my mom with the terrible news. Michael had been killed. In the morning, I found my mother and sister crying. "What’s wrong?" I asked.

Mom took a deep breath. "Come here ..."

And then we started the sad journey to go to see Michael. It still hurts to remember that day. The only thing that helps is telling my story. I hope that you will remember it if you are going to get into a car with someone who has had a drink —even just one drink.

Kangaroo: Horton?

Horton: Uhoo, sorry. I just ... ah. There was this speck1. And they called up for help. And I was ...

Kangaroo: The speck called out for help?

Horton: Well, not the speck. I mean that’s ridiculous2. Is what you thought I’ve been? No, the speck can’t call out for help. Come on. Get real! No. There’s a tiny3 person on that speck and needs my help.

Kangaroo:Absurd4. There aren’t people that small.

Horton: Whoa, maybe they aren’t small. Maybe ...We’re big.

Kangaroo: Horton!

Horton: No! Really, think about it. What if there is someone way out there, looking down on our world right now. And to them, we are the speck. And then this someone else comes along. He says, "Oh, there can’t be people that small."

Ann has been in a really black mood all day." Blue" sometimes means sad. "Yellow" sometimes means easily scared. "Black" sometimes means angry. "See red" means get angry, too.

Does blue sometimes mean sad? / We are often told that yellow means afraid, aren’t we? Would you like to tell ...? / May I ask you about ...? / Would you mind me asking you about ...?

I have been feeling ... / black / blue ... means ..., doesn’t it?

I think ... / So I believe ... / Am I right?"。 Do you think so? / Is that right?"。

Dear Mrs. Brown,

I often read the sentences such as "She feels blue today" and "Tommy was yellow" on the book. Could you tell me if these colors have something to do with people’s feelings or emotions? Does blue sometimes mean sad? Lucy likes swimming very much. She went to her grandparents’ place, a small mountain village near a river. After she got there, it rained all the time. When her father asked her how she was, she said, "I have been feeling blue these days." We are often told that yellow means easily scared, aren’t we? Lily read a sentence in a story, "He is too yellow to stand up and fight." Black sometimes means angry. Is that right? Jack was mad at Tom. He gave him a black look.

Hope to receive your letter soon. Yours, Wang Dong

1. 文章过于冗长,这是因为所选择的材料太多,需要对所选择的材料重新进行加工,或删除某些材料;

2. 只注意列举事例,即事情的过程描写,缺乏材料之间必要的联系以及与收信人的探讨;

Dear Mrs. Brown,

I often read the sentences such as "She looks blue today" and "Tommy was yellow". What do those words mean? Some color words can tell people’s feelings or emotions, can’t they?

Once I read a story: Last summer vacation, Lucy went to visit her grandparents and enjoy the country sightseeing. It rained during her stay there. She told her father on the phone, "I have been feeling blue these days." I also read a story like this: Once, Lily read Lucy’s notebook, "He was too yellow to stand up and fight." Lucy gave a black look at Lily. Lily said, "Sorry. Don’t be mad at me." I feel that sometimes blue means sad, yellow means easily scared, black means angry. Is that right? Does each color mean anything more?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours,

Wang Dong

Powerful sentences:

1. She has holiday blue.

He has told a white lie. Things look black. She is still quite green at this job.

2. She used to be proud of it, but now she has changed her mind.

used to +动词原形,表示"过去常常";be proud of 表示"以…… She is proud of her sweet voice.

3. It rained hard during her stay there.

I have learned a lot from my stay with a Chinese family.

Dear Mr. Green,

I think that sometimes people use actions to express their feelings. I have read a lot of English stories and found the same thing to happen.

Once I read a passage: Mary helped an old blind man to cross a busy street and was late for class. Her teacher said she was the laziest girl in the class. She said nothing, but just pursed her lips. I think that "pursed her lips" shows that she was unhappy or angry. I also read another story: Ann’s father sees that her school reports are all "A". He nods with a smile. I am sure he is happy! So, can I say that in English, people also use their actions to express their feelings?

Hope to hear from you soon.

What do kids do? Birthday kids can donate a book. The headmaster of their school will then read it to their class. The headmaster also hands out birthday certificates2, special pencils, and makes sure the kids’ names are read out in the school’s morning news.

Parents can send stickers, pencils and other things to students. None of the things can be food. If a child donates jump ropes or other sports equipment, that child may get his or her name on a certificate. It will then be displayed at school. About ten years ago when I was a student in college, I was working at my university’s Museum of Natural History. One day while I was working at the cash register1 in the gift shop, I saw an old couple come in with a little girl in a wheelchair.

As I looked closer at this girl, I saw that she had no arms or legs. As the couple and the girl came close, I was looking down at the cash register. I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink2. As I took the money from her grandparents, I looked back at the girl. She was giving me the cutest, largest smile I had ever seen. Suddenly, her disability had gone, and all I saw was a beautiful girl. Her smile moved me and gave me a completely new idea of what life is all about. She took me away from being a poor, unhappy college student and brought me into her world, a world of smiles, love and warmth.

That was ten years ago. I’m a successful business person now. Whenever I feel down and think about the troubles of the world, I always think about that little girl and the special lesson about life she taught me.

It’s never too old to learn.”

Every morning, Alfred walks to Edison Elementary School at 7. He arrives at 7:30 am and finds a quiet place in the library. There he reads until 9 am. Then he goes to Alesia Hamilton’s first-grade classroom to join his first-grade friends. Alfred sits on his short chair among his classmates. He is ready to learn. The look on his face is as eager1 as that of a five-year-old child on Christmas morning.

Alfred Williams is 69 years old. He spent his childhood2 helping his family farm. His mother taught him to count, but she did not know how to read. School was too expensive for them. His mother hoped Alfred would someday have that opportunity.

"If you go to church as much as I do, you know that they say God says this and God says that," Alfred says. "I don’t know what God says. I just hear what everyone says He says, and I want to read it for myself."

"Our first-grade friends love Alfred coming in each day," Hamilton says. "They don’t treat him like an adult. They treat him as one of them."

Alfred Williams has plans. "I’m going to be the first person in my family to go to college. In 10 years, I will be 79. I’m going to be an educated man," says Alfred.

In January, time celebrates his birthday.

February marks a day for those we love.1

March takes the blanket of snow off the grass.

April’s when the bugs fly out; they come to sting.

May is a mother and brings a day for all mothers to cheer.2

In June, schoolbooks, pencils and papers take a vacation.

July comes in; fireworks go up.3

It’s hot and we camp at the lake.
August brings the hottest part of the sun and all the slip 'n’slides come with him.

In September, the trees take off their skins and the leaves change color.

October brings pumpkins and spooky costumes and candy.4

In November, we give thanks to God for everything.5

In December, snow falls down, snowmen go up —

And we say, "Happy Birthday, Jesus!"6

Last summer I had an awful car accident and I had to spend two months in hospital. I hope my sad experience will be a lesson to all drivers, especially those who think it is safe to drink and drive.

I remember I had a few bottles of beer with my friends because I was feeling a bit upset. I thought I could drive home that night, but thirty minutes later, I was losing control of myself, yet I still went on because I really wanted to go to bed.

My car then hit a parked truck on the side of the road. The last thing I remember was trying to get out of the car with blood pouring down my head and broken glass all over my body. I remember trying to get out but my legs were stuck and I could hardly move. Luckily, I was wearing a seat belt. Most people say that saved my life.

The next thing I remember was lying on a hospital bed. It seemed I only broke my leg.

This is one of the dangers of drinking and driving. I hope that people both young and old will drive more safely in the future.

There are many differences between America and China. I think that the biggest difference is in traffic rules.
I think some traffic rules in America are very interesting such as:

Stop sign:

There are stop signs at all crossings that don’t have traffic lights. All cars must come to a stop when reaching the stop sign.

Traffic light:

There is a traffic light at every major road crossing. Cars can often turn in any directions here. There is a kind of line for turning left. When a car wants to turn left on the road, it may be driven into the line first, and then give a signal of turning left. When it is safe, it may turn left.

Specific item1:

Let’s take parking as an example. There are three kinds of lines by the road-side. Their colors are white, blue or red. Each line may hold different kinds of cars. There are many streets in some areas, and there is always a rule that some cars can-not park at some time or some period of time. The order of passing is also given very specifically2. About the priority3 of pedestrians and cars:

At pedestrian crossings, pedestrians have right of way on the roads. Only after the pedestrians have crossed the road the cars can continue.

The population of Hong Kong is very large. Since taxis, buses, and the subway are all very convenient and aren’t too expensive, about 90% of the people in Hong Kong depend on public transport.

However, unlike most other places in China, in Hong Kong the traffic moves on the left. There is a lot of traffic in the streets, so traffic is really heavy in Hong Kong during the daytime. Each year, about 21,000 drivers, passengers, and pedestrians are hurt or killed in traffic accidents in Hong Kong.

Speed limits1 are 50 kilometers per hour in city areas and 80 kilometers per hour on highways. When you are in a car, either sitting in the front or in the back seats you must wear seat belts. You might have to pay as much as $50,000 HK for dangerous driving causing death or you may be put into prison2. Whenever drivers are involved in traffic accidents, they need to have their alcohol3 level tested. If any driver’s blood alcohol level is over the limit, the police will take him or her away. Drivers aren’t allowed to use mobile phones while driving in Hong Kong. Anyone caught breaking this law will be fined as much as $2,000 HK.

I think if everyone follows the traffic rules, the roads will be safer. If you have an accident, you can call at 999.
